John Steinbeck correspondence and writings relating to the party conventions for the 1956 presidential candidates, 1949-1964.

The collection includes correspondence about the Democratic party convention between Steinbeck (carbons) and Adlai Stevenson, Harry Truman, W. Willard Wirtz, Clayton Fritchey, Howard O. Hunter, Sr., and others who worked for the election of Adlai E. Stevenson in 1956. Also included are some typescript articles that Steinbeck wrote about both Democrat and Republican conventions, as well as "Closed circuit speech for Senator Kefauvre, " an Adlai Stevenson speech from 1952 and the final Stevenson acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for president, 1956. There is a file of correspondence with Mark F. Ethridge and James S. Pope (that Steinbeck, himself filed separately under "Louisville Courier Journal"; and apparently unrelated correspondence with his literary agents (1949) and William Faulkner (1956). In 1958 there is an interesting exchange between Earle C. Clements (of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee) and Steinbeck, in which Steinbeck lays out a proposed Democratic platform for the 1960 election. And lastly, there is a folder for John Emery, the actor, a friend for whom Steinbeck had written an eulogy.
